How long should CHKDSK take?
« on: May 30, 2012, 02:38:50 AM »
Yep, just a simple question.
Not usual scan of course, but with repair. It already took 2,5  days. My hdd is WD 500 gb with a lot of video data. So i'm wondering how many more days it would take? I've no intention to abort it..
It is also almost full. ~40gb was free last i remember. Perhaps that's the reason it takes too long.. It checks files as i see, but pretty slow and random. And yet, i want to make sure. Thanks in advance!

I found this on the net  hope it helps  Did you tick the "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" box? That would explain why it's taking a long time. Microsoft do actually warn, in the technical documentation that chkdsk can take a long time to run but I agree that a warning when you schedule it would be a good idea.

It's really not a good idea to cancel a chkdsk once it's started. I'd bite the bullet and let it do its thing - better than a trashed disk.

I agree, it should not take that long.  But if you can let it finish

run a defrag after  ;)

You dont mention what flavour of windows you have

All right.. Not the firtst time one of my hdds is about to drop dead. But this time i wanted to try something i haven't done before, which is chkdsk with repair as well.
Thanks for response. I've another one, 750gb, which would take a few more extra days, or even...gosh, weeks. LoL
Bad luck, bad luck!
Thanks guys!

Win 7? it's not unusual for defrag or check disk to take upwards of 2 days with Win 7 or Vista. Microsoft chanced how the programs work, I dunno what they did to make them such so much, but something that an XP does in a few hours now takes days or weeks! Seems like Microsoft doesn't know the golden rule: if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

last time i defragged my hard drive using Microsoft's defrag it took 3 weeks! so I use 3d party software, defraggler, now. takes only about 4 hours to do a 1.5 Tb drive.
but to check disk I do't know though, I don't recall ever running check disk on my computer.

Yep. So far it took 2,5 weeks for 500gb to scan and repair. It went good.
Now i'm figuring out what to do with the data, then i'll be remapping bad sectors with mhdd.
At least for now i have access to my WD 750gb, which surprises me most.
