Christmas in your houses
« on: December 22, 2009, 04:31:10 PM »
How do you celebrate these Christmas? What do you eat, do you have some special commons with your family?

In Poland we always eat a mushroom soup or a 'red borscht'. This last word is, I guess, a loan from Slavic languages. It doesn't sound very 'English'. Anyway, it's a soup made from beets. In my house we rather prefer the mushroom soup.

Later, we have famous pierogi (dumplings), carps, herrings, a cabbage with mushrooms and meat, a compote from dry fruits (I don't fancy it very much) and some sweet things, like a pancake or a honey-cake.

There are presents underneath the Christmas tree of course, but I have my birthdays one week before Christmas Eve, so - you know - I often get an one big gift. ;P But... and here's a problem that I have had for about 4 years. I don't feel an atmosphere of holidays. I find it everything boring, like one big propaganda. 30 minutes before support parents are fighting and later 'all is good'. It's so fake, unnatural.

Every year I think about going to home for elderly or playpen. Your time is very precious in there, people can respect you and feel gladly, because of appreciating your help. My family would kill me if I did it, but... I guess there people understand what's really going on with Christmas.

In my opinion, we should spend the Christmas support with people that we don't do it very often. I know it would be difficult to do, but I wanted to spend even Christmas Eve with friend from Polish-German exchange - we really like each other. Or with my friends, it would be more natural. But it's obviously impossible - folks spend these holidays with their families and it would be hard to come from Stuttgart to Lodz for one day and come back to Germany. It's just an idea, maybe a dream.

tradition in my house is simple:

On christmas day i cook the turkey, been a grade A turkey this usually takes 8 hours

i stuff the turkey with stuffing and cheese (chese helps keep the turkey moist as well as adding to flavor)

and roast the potatoes at the side of the turkey, while adding stweing steak to the side to make the gravey about 20 minutes before the turkey is ready.

i allso add a few gravey granules to the mixed veg in order to make the normal gravey

we then sit and eat it with yorkshire puddings :)

and that be about the only tradition i have

Well, on Christmas Eve night me and my parents eat at my Grandmother's house. She always makes fresh Oyster Stew, and Black walnut cookies. And Christmas morning my mom fixes a Turkey, I'm not sure what kind.

Oh and cute pic Robbie  ;D
