« on: June 06, 2009, 02:30:13 PM »
Well after I asked this in the Forum of my CSS Clan I ask now you people! I'm pretty sure some people here ahve steam now what do you think about this client?

I like steam and I hate it. I like because it's very easy to use and kinda useful for gamers but I ahte it because my account already got 2 times highjacked, the last highjacker cheatet on my profile well now all games are VAC banned.

It's been a good reliable service to to me so far. Great for reaching friends and playing with them.

Oh and you probably shouldn't give you password to anyone and only tell your good friends your username.

I don't recall ever having any trouble with it.  I wasn't able to run HL2 Episode 1 or portal, but that was because of my computer not steam :P

It started slowly and crappy, like any new system and tech. Valve risked putting out Steam with HL2 but they have a good eye on marketing stuff, especially when come on indie games that can be bought and revisited to a full aaa title (CSS was a mod of HL1, L4D was an indie title developed by Turtle Rock Studios, DoD was a mod for HL1, Portal was a university experiment on the Quake 1 engine, TF was released for Quake 1 then ported to HL1 as mod).

The thing that piss me off about Steam are some of the third-party developers such as Activision. They put fucking high prices on games especially for Europe (Prototype is 60 Euro which are aroud 80$).

And instead on other platforms such as D2D prices are cheaper. So the problem is only one, the costs to keep a game on Steam are higher but this is strange too as I can't understand how casual titles can survive there then.

Another reason is "sell experiments", like those weekend deals, putting the price high the first two weeks and then cutting it in half increasing the sells a lot.

Not bad idea but difficult to happen.
The popularity of the mod could increase immensely.

I was being very sarcastic, this mod will never end up on anything but a hand full of peoples hard drives :)

Oh, and the fudge pack I guess!

Well after the next update this mod will be great! And if the Ptach make the game more easier the noobs will play it now too. I'm planning a map mod for ED like AWP,the normal Postal 2 STP map with Eternal damnation but this is only a fix idea lawl.

Steam is a good idea and it is well implemented with improvements occasionally coming down the pipe.
Because Steam is popular, there is the inevitable backlash from the "it's popular therefore it must suck" mindset.  This is the same group of people that get mad when their Indie band signs a contract and starts making money.

You can get mods, demos, and full blown games off Steam. You no longer need HalfLife to get Steam.

So the gent who started this thread  :finga:

Mods can be released on Steam - the mod team in particular just has to have their shit together. Dystopia for instance.
And sometimes if they really have their shit together - the mod gets picked up and deemed worthy to have a price tag on it: Portal is the example here.

I've thanked Steam for those demos that helped me avoid dumping cash on otherwise flashy box art and some attached bling. Also if I buy a game from Steam and the computer crashes - a repeat issue here - I can redownload games I've paid for.
I got a fist full of bad ideas!
