Video Game Addiction NOT Considered a Mental Illness
« on: June 26, 2007, 06:44:13 AM »
How Much of my tax money went into this?

Doctors backed away on Sunday from a controversial proposal to designate video game addiction as a mental disorder akin to alcoholism, saying psychiatrists should study the issue more.

Addiction experts also strongly opposed the idea at a debate at the American Medical Association's annual meeting.

They said more study is needed before excessive use of video and online games -- a problem that affects about 10 percent of players -- could be considered a mental illness.

More study? Like as in they need to play more videos games? To see if they're addictive?

While occasional use of video games is harmless and may even help with some disorders like autism, doctors said in extreme cases it can interfere with day-to-day necessities like working, showering or even eating.

Ok, we'll implement a "Shower before you can play" policy.

There's a lot more on the link up above. I just can't believe it's getting covered in the News - and the point to this is to "ease the path for insurance coverage of video game addiction."

WHAT?

Great, so are some parents going to be denied full health insurance because their kids play more than 5 video games a year?
"Well they might be addicted and that's a pre-existing condition..."

i agree to that,i spend day in day out on my p.c modeling, texturing ect

it helps me relax........at least most of the time.

however i agree that the p.c,net games modding and or whatever else there is,is addictive, there has been many arguments in my house that i do too much modding modeling and whatever.

its my escape :P

Yea, how many kids died because of world of warcraft! how many i ask you!
lol, well in the end, the people should take care over them self in the first place, if the game is addictive like world of warcraft, something fun is about it. And i know there is something, i was once one of those people. But only for a very crazy week i'll never forget. Its stupid to make the responsible if something bad happend. Do games pull triggers? lol
